ASDA had previously been using a Project Collaboration Tool as a means of housing their standards data. This had proved unsuccessful for a number of reasons; including the fact that information was uploaded in different places by different parties and was inconsistent in terms of both content and presentation.
ICON was commissioned in 2003 to create a dedicated online standards environment to catalogue all equipment, fixturisation and signage used in the various types of ASDA stores. Although access to the system is primarily aimed at internal personnel and departments, approved external suppliers are also able view certain information. Access to sensitive data such as costs is strictly limited.
In addition to the core product, features developed specifically for ASDA include the establishment of an electronic Change Management & Approval system and the output of all cost data directly to an internal Cost Management system.
As part of the Walmart group, ASDA had well established security systems in place such as restrictions relating to download and usage of certain file types. By working closely with the IT department and hosting the system externally, ICON has been able to assist all users in making the most of the system.
Based upon the early feedback regarding the Building Standards solution, Walmart's German supermarket chain is now looking at transferring its Standards into the system.
